naco's secret to living

Inside the Studio

Behind the scenes, and some more stuff!

Recently our team wrapped up a shoot for the Orimba Bookcase alongside some incredible talent from Swinburne Uni. I'm not sure we've talked about this before in our blogs, but Seb & Mond actually lecture at Swinburne so next time you're there, come and say hi! (unless Mond has his noise cancelling headphones on, that means he's in work mode)

As we looked over the photos and videos β€” some candid, some carefully composed β€” we found ourselves reflecting on how much the orimba bookcase represents.

It’s not just a product to us anymore, it’s a snapshot of how we work, what matters to us, and the quiet power of collaboration.

Designing for Flexibility, Without Compromise

The idea for Orimba came out of dozens of customer conversations. People wanted something minimalist, but not cold. Flexible, but not flimsy. Modular, but with the feel of a bespoke piece.

We started sketching. The goal was to create a bookcase that felt custom, but could live easily in a range of spaces β€” homes, studios, even retail interiors. The structure had to be strong and simple. The proportions needed to work at any scale. And it had to assemble in a way that felt satisfying, not frustrating.

Orimba is the result: a modern shelving solution that feels intentional from every angle. Clean lines, warm materials, and just enough detail to make it stand out.

Prototypes, Reworks & Quiet Obsessions

Like a lot of our pieces, Orimba took longer than planned. The shelf spacing changed more than once. We experimented with way too many finishes. At one point we scrapped an entire version because it felt β€œoff” in a way we couldn’t quite name.

But that’s the process we’ve built at Naco. We stay close to the work. We tweak, test, and refine until it feels right β€” not just on paper, but in the room.

It’s not exactly glamorous, but it’s real & it feels like us.

Behind the Camera: A Shoot That Felt Like Us

The recent shoot wasn’t just about getting good images for the website. It was a chance to show Orimba in use β€” with books, art, records, ceramics β€” and to capture how it actually feels in a space.

The studio was filled with natural light, quiet energy, and a sense of calm you only get when the furniture works with the room, not against it.

Everyone on the team β€” design, photography, styling β€” brought their own eye to the process. We weren’t staging perfection. We were showing possibility.

And yes, we got some great stills. But the real win? Seeing the team pause mid-shoot, noticing the details they helped bring to life. That’s the moment we knew Orimba was finished.

Why It Still Matters

In a world of fast design and flat-pack everything, we’re trying to build things that last β€” visually, structurally, and emotionally.

The Orimba Bookcase is our response to the throwaway shelf. It’s made to move with you, adapt to your life, and age well. Like all good design, it’s there when you need it β€” and quietly beautiful when you don’t.

Explore Orimba

If you're curious, you can view the full Orimba gallery [here] β€” and if you look closely, you might spot the details we obsessed over for far too long.

Because that’s the kind of work we want to keep doing β€” and the kind of home we think you deserve.
